Top 10 Do’s and Don’ts for New Arizona Contractors

I was perusing the latest Phoenix Business Journal over the weekend and came accross the list of new contractor licensees published by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.  There are basic things to look out for that can trip up the unsuspecting new contractors — and even those old grizzled contractors.  So here is my Top Ten List of Do’s and Don’ts for New Contractors:

  1. Do list your licenses (all of them) everywhere.  Include your license on letterhead, business cards, contracts, emails (yes, emails!), website, company trucks, advertising, mailers and anything that the general public receives or sees.
  2. Do timely renew your licenses and license bonds.
  3. Do keep your contact information up to date with the Registrar of Contractors and the Arizona Corporation Commission.
  4. Do have written contracts with the required minimum elements, and get them signed.
  5. Do include in your contract the right to file a complaint with the Registrar if entering into a residential construction contract.
  6. Don’t contract beyond the scope of your license (whether by too large of a contract or for something that you are not licensed to perform)
  7. Don’t “lend” your license to someone else for a fee.
  8. Don’t ignore communications from the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.
  9. Don’t ever think the Registrar of Contractors will be on your side.
  10. Don’t ever respond to the Registrar without first talking to a knowledgeable construction lawyer.
