In the workplace, it is against the law to be faced with any religious discrimination, but what about political discrimination? Especially recently, with all of the political division in the country, what happens when political discrimination takes place at work? Furthermore, what should you do if you end up facing religious discrimination in the workplace?
Religious discrimination is defined as treating an employee differently or unfavorably because of their religious beliefs. The law is set in place by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This also includes treating an employee differently for being married to a person that is part of a certain religion.
Under the current law, it is forbidden to discriminate in the workplace based on religious beliefs. This includes firing an employee, paying the employee less, giving the employee tough assignments on purpose, not promoting an employee or not providing benefits.

Political discrimination is defined as an employer making a job decision based on an employee’s political beliefs, activities or party affiliated with. Some examples include refusing to hire a democrat, firing someone for them believing in gun control or demoting a republican.
Unlike religion discrimination, political discrimination in the workplace is not protected under the federal law.
There are exceptions though. A government employee is actually protected under the law and some states do have laws in place that protect employees in private employee sector. Arizona is not one of those states.
So, what does it all mean?
Since there is no federal law in place, an employer can legally take political views into consideration in the workplace.
